One of the elements affecting the inefficiency is also the geometry of the suspension system. The angles of the suspension geometry are:
- wheel convergence which affects: tire wear, excessive wear of wheel bearing elements, deterioration of driving stability
- inclination and advance of the kingpin which affects: the ability to maintain the given direction of travel and ease of driving the car
- the camber of the wheel that affects the behaviour of the track, in particular when cornering
Inspect the condition of the suspension components, including the wheel geometry check, at each spring/fall inspection, or every 15.000 – 20.000 miles.
Car suspension is a system of spring elements connecting road wheels, axles or drive axles with the frame or directly with the car body.
The task of the suspension is primarily to dampen the shocks of the body caused by the rolling of the car’s road wheels on uneven surfaces and to mitigate all kinds of vibrations occurring during the vehicle’s movement.
The suspension ensures driving comfort, and safety and reduces wear of vehicle components, increasing its durability. Structurally, suspensions can be divided:
- rigid – both road wheels are mounted on a common rigid axle connected to the car frame or body through spring elements. Changing the position of one wheel, e.g. in the event of driving over an uneven road surface, causes a corresponding change in the position of the other wheel
- independent – each of the wheels is individually held in the right position, frame, or car body by rigid elements with joints or spring elements. Thanks to this, the deflection of one wheel does not directly change the position of the wheel of the same axle
